| Massey University New Zealand Degrees begin in Sri Lanka |
|
Parents in Sri Lanka eager to ensure quality international higher education for their G.C.E. Advanced Level qualified children are now seeking the milestone services of an certified education provider in the country. The Graduate Institute of Science and Management (GISM) provides quality education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and is the only institution both in Sri Lanka and in the whole South Asian region with which Massey University, New Zealand’s defining University has recently become partnered with.
The applications for student enrolments for 2011 degree intake are currently been received for the degree programmes in Computer, IT, Software and Business, with over 15 different major subjects such as: HR, Finance, Accountancy, Marketing, Management and Business Development. The prospective students will have a chance to meet with the respective department heads from the Massey University during 24th to 27th January at GISM Campus, and also during the EDEX exhibition (Stall 195E) in BMICH Colombo.
STUDY PROGRAMMES The Computer Sciences, Information Technology and Business Studies undergraduate Massey University pathway programmes that the GISM Campus commences in February 2011 have been accredited by New Zealand and International Professional Bodies. Massey University degrees are without dispute recognized worldwide.
BENEFITS TO PARENTS Chairman of the GISM Campus, Prof. Dr. G. G. Senaratne explained that the advantages offered to students who register and enroll for the Massey University Degree programmes at the GISM City Campus in Udahamulla, Nugegoda are many. He noted that parents were attracted by substantial hard-currency saving by studying the first year at GISM within Sri Lanka before completing their Massey degrees in New Zealand.
MENTORING AND STUDENT GUIDANCE During their undergraduate studies, each student is assigned a mentor by GISM who would continue to be his or her mentor even during their period of study at Massey University. Prof. Dr. Senaratne emphasized that an orientation programme and IELTS support classes are conducted by GISM while undertaking New Zealand visa documentation for students free of charge.
ACCOMODATION AND STUDENT JOB SEARCH (DURING AND AFTER) Further, GISM will assist the students to find accommodation in New Zealand even prior to departure, and part-time work as well as employability on completion of the degree in New Zealand. On completion of their degree, students are given the opportunity to apply for Job Visa to find full-time employment. Thereafter they could apply for Permanent Residence, if they wished to do so.
LIVING STYLE New Zealand ranks highly in international comparisons on human development, quality of life, life expectancy, literacy, public education, peace, prosperity, economic freedom, ease of doing business, lack of corruption, press freedom, and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. It provides an exclusive living style and a safe academic environment that students can enjoy and gain immensely from.

Island-wide seminar series on “Foreign Education: How to find the right path” |
|
During recent years, there is a significant increase in the demand for foreign education among the students in Sri Lanka and neighboring countries. One of the main reasons for this is the inability of providing study options as they need by the state sector Universities and private institutions for students who pass the G.C. E. Advanced Level Examination and therefore they tend to look for other options overseas. In many countries this is a common practice but unfortunately there are no proper systems to guide the potential students and parents to select the best education provider of the student and this will always depends on several important factors.
It is human nature that the parents look for the best education option for their children but the questions come probably after A/L results: “What” is the proper course programme, “Where” the best education programme is available and “How” their requirements can be achieved. The answers to these are not so simple because, specially in foreign education, more students and their parents do not have realistic information related to these questions. The tendency is to listen to somebody who promotes the education programme or depend on the information available per the media and promotional material. However, there are many cases with such experience that their sons and daughters returning home with loss of expectations or having ended up with unsuccessful in their education.
Thus, the Graduate Institute of Science and Management has organised series of seminars to educate the students and parents about the availability of international education. Professor Dr. Senaratne conducted these seminars free of charge at different locations in the Country.
As a result of the opening invitation made by His Excellency the President of Sri Lank Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksha, Prof. Dr. Senaratne who is one of the professionals returning home from overseas to support the development of the country. Prof. Dr. G. G. Senaratne is presently with the Graduate Institute of Science and Management, Sri Lanka as the President of GISM. This Institute is established by internationally well reputed academics who wish contributing to develop Sri Lanka. Their ambitions are backed by a faculty of local and foreign experts as well as their Universities.
Prof. Senaratne explained at an interview with the Sunday Education Times that GISM is a model of New Zealand education in Sri Lanka. Further he added, “GISM provides quality education in undergraduate and postgraduate level and it is the only institution of its kind both in Sri Lanka and in the Asian region. With such a high world ranking University like Massey, New Zealand with whom we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding is indeed a great assert to Sri Lanka.”
Indeed, according to the Legatum Prosperity Index 2010, New Zealand is the number one in Education among 110 countries in the world. Also the Massey University is the largest University in New Zealand and one of the top ranking Universities in the world. Students who go to New Zealand Massey University will have the opportunity to get scholarships and also to enjoy the New Zealand’s best life style. Apart from this, they can work part time as well as full time after completing the degree and thus apply for permanent residence.
Under the Massey University educational programmes, as Prof. Senaratne stated, the GISM campus conducts Massey pathway programs for Computer Sciences, IT, Software Engineering and Business Studies degrees. President of the GISM Campus, Prof. Senaratne added that one of the main attractions is a substantial amount of hard-currency is saved in the first year. |

There are many an on-going accelerated developmental programmes in Sri Lanka, geared to ensure the Nation with a better future. After ending the war, Sri Lankans now have the freedom and the opportunity to support this venture in many ways, especially for the professionals who wish to contribute for the country’s development.
“The graduate Institute of Science and Management (GISM) is one of the recently started higher educational institutes whose intention is to help develop Sri Lanka through its educational and research programmes”. This message was released by Professor Dr. G. G. Senaratne at the press conference organized by GISM at the Foundation Institute, Colombo, recently, after signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Massey University, New Zealand. This is an immense achievement because GISM is the only institution of its kind, in Sri Lanka and the South Asian region, with whom the world’s high ranking Massey University, New Zealand has signed such an MoU offering several benefits to Sri Lankan students and their parents.
The GISM, Sri Lanka, in affiliation with New Zealand's premier University, Massey, marks its academic role for the nation. Applications for the Degree programmes in Software Engineering, Computer Science, IT and Business are now being received for the student intake in February, 2011. First year of each degree programme is done at the GISM Campus in Udahamulla, Nugegoda and the remaining two years study completed at the Massey University in New Zealand.
GISM, recognizing the current skill shortage in the country, has designed Diploma courses especially in the above fields enabling students to either go for industry at the end of the 1st year or continue Higher Diploma programme in the second year in advanced theoretical and practical training. Several full time Diploma and short-term modular courses that are specifically designed for industry professionals and executives will also starts in mid-January 2011.
GISM also focuses on research and consultancy services to address issues in the fields of industry, business and social to find viable solutions. Researchers and Scientists are invited to register with GISM’s Research and Consultancy Group.
The Honorable Minister of Higher Education Mr. S.B. Dissanayake, through his message to GISM at the inauguration ceremony agrees that GISM’s incorporation with prestigious international universities would provide opportunities to students from Sri Lanka and the neighboring countries to pursue international graduate and postgraduate studies locally, thus saving a substantial amount of hard currency. The Minister also hailed GISM’s ambitious programme has a frame work of Social Corporate Responsibility. |
